Applique Doillies

Applique Doillies

A doily is the perfect to put a vase or a lovely bowl on. These are done in applique. Use left over bits of fabric or organza from your fabric stash. I did mine with organza. I just love the look.

The doily measure approximately 20 cm / 8 inches in diameter. Each piece is made entirely in the hoop.

What You Will Need To Make Your Applique Doillies

Plain cotton fabric

Cotton Fabric or Organza for applique

Water soluble stabilizer

Pair of sharp scissors

NOTE: Colorstops have been included in the design. For the applique pieces and placement lines I used the same color ie, if the satin stitch is going to be white, then use white for placement and tacking lines.

Let’s Get Started

How You can Make Applique Quiltblocks

Hoop up 2 layers of water soluble stabilizer. Stitch the first color. This is a placement line. Place a piece of plain cotton fabric over the placement line.

Stitch the second color. This is a tacking line.

I don’t trim around the design yet. That comes later. Next stitch the next color. This marks where to place the next piece of fabric. If it’s the leaves then you will use green. Place a piece of fabric over the stitching line and stitch the next color. If you are using organza, use two pieces to really get the color to show. Now that the tacking stitching is done, remove the hoop from the machine and trim away the fabric.

DO NOT TAKE THE EMBROIDERY OUT OF THE HOOP.

Stitch out the next color. Again this is a marker line. Place a piece of fabric over the stitching line and stitch the next color. If you are using organza, use two pieces to really get the color to show. Now that the tack- ing stitching is done, remove the hoop from the machine and trim away the fabric.

DO NOT TAKE THE EMBROIDERY OUT OF THE HOOP.

Now trim around the entire design removing the excess plain cotton fabric. Stitch out the rest of the design

Stitch out 8 pieces.

To Complete

Cut out the pieces. Using your sewing machine with a 3 – 4 mm wide zig-zag stitch, stitch the pieces to- gether. To stitch together, place the pieces side by side and stitch along the broad satin sides.
